Today I disassembled my computer to clean it. Tons of dust. Felt great. Reassembled everything and…one of my HDDs isn’t showing up. Checked data and power, all good. So it’s a SATA port thing.

Looked at motherboard manual, looked at the charts/reference guides, thought I understood it, changed a port…the HDD in question is there but now my M.2 SSD isn’t showing up.

Also, I wasn’t expecting to need to be doing minor surgery on my PC so I took some edibles and they are hitting and I’m…I’m just lost. Everything I thought I knew is a lie. Help?

SPECS:

  • MSI x299 Raider motherboard (direct link to manual PDF, start at page 36?)
  • i9-7920x CPU
  • M.2 NVMe SSD in M2_1
  • M.2 SATA SSD in M2_2
  • SATA HDD connected at SATA2
  • SATA HDD connected at SATA4
  • SATA HDD connected at SATA3

This configuration results in M2_2 not appearing. If I move SATA3 to SATA6 one of the HDDs doesn’t appear.

I’ve been mucking with computers over 30 years now, I should have this but I’m so lost.

Hey again! Okay, this isn’t working. Not sure what’s up. In fact, the device in the second M.2 slot (SATA SSD) isn’t showing up either, now.

Using 2, 4, and 6 only two of the three HDDs show up.

USing 2, 6, and 7 only one of the HDDs shows up.

In all scenarios the SATA SSD in M2_2 is just not showing up. Maybe it got loosened during the cleaning?
