What book have you read that wasn’t subjectively “bad” but you regrets reading all the same?

For me, Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter. The book was engaging and it kept me on my toes, but I just with I hadn’t “poisoned my head” with all the graphic gore that was in there. I years later i still think about this and how I really wish I had never read it.

Question inspired by a comment /u/PrincessOfWales made in another thread :)

The name of the wind (book one of the king killer chronicles). A friend recommended it to me but after I finished it I realized he is probably never going to finish the series. I regretted investing that time in a series that won’t be finished.

It’s very spoiler-sensitive but Brothers by Yu Hua infuriated me to no end, which isn’t a dig at the book because it’s what the author wanted. Even made a post venting about it.

“Skeleton Crew” by Stephen King. It included the short story “The Jaunt,” which I wish I hadn’t read because it was too scary. But it wasn’t bad.

I’ve read some books I’ve really enjoyed until the author flubs the landing. I’ve read all three Amor Towles books and it happens every time. The overall story is great and the writing is solid but I feel let down by the ending each time.

All The Ugly And Wonderful Things. Ugh.

The writing wasn’t great, the story sucked, and the grooming and age gap relationship was gross.

Filth by Irvine Welsh. I understand what the book is promising with the title, but I don’t think the Stoney provided anything worthwhile for the amount of time you have to spend seeing the world firsthand from one of the most loathsome characters I’ve ever encountered in fiction

Revival by Stephen King. The ending was so fucking bleak.
