Hey guys, I currently am on the verge of finishing my masters in chemistry in Germany. I am originally from India and don’t want to go back. Although Germany is a seemingly great country to live, unfortunately, for me, it never suited me. I have never been so mentally depressed and unmotivated ever in my life (despite previously having a hard life). I think it’s the loneliness and how you’re just never accepted. I cannot think of living here long term. I have nothing against Germany so I would like to not have comments ‘defending’ my stance of living in Germany. I have made up my mind and I just cannot live such a life. I want to ask which country would be great for me. I have a background in chemistry so would be great to have a country that has opportunities for that. That’s the most important. Preferably an English speaking country. Safe for women. Good work life balance. Acceptance of expats(of course I’m not delusional but at least to an extent).

    I mean, the sense of not quite belonging / being new to the party is just part of the expat experience, I think, and you said you don’t want to go back to India. So I’d say your best bet is a country that has a long tradition of immigration, a country with loads of very strong expat communities. In Europe I guess your best bet is France? But honestly I think in your case, it’s probably better to set your sights on the US. You’re not gonna find a significantly different attitude to expats and significantly larger expat community in Scandinavia or southern Europe.

    I’m in a similar situation and I think the only good option is to go back(even though it sucks). Trust me, starting life from scratch in another country with zero motivation is not going to work. Either you need to be super motivated or super rich. Feel free to DM :)

    I am blown away that people are suggesting the US. Idk if these ppl work in STEM, or they are young or something? but I am in my 30s and my entire (very big) family have STEM degrees or work in science besides me.

    STEM degree in the US is not some cake walk that people make it seem. It is really hard still… and you may have to be willing to move to really frankly boring like Missouri or Iowa… there is of course stem in big cities but big cities like NY/SF and Seattle are run off of capitalist stuff -aka selling ppl things- aka the arts and business. A lot of the science I. The US is happening in smaller cities and more conservative places. 75% of ppl with a STEM degree in the US don’t go into working in STEM bc there are not as many jobs as ppl make it out to be. I learned about this in a class in depth a few years back. We have double the amount of STEM graduates as we have available jobs in the US.

    Also loneliness is rampant in the US… I wouldn’t go there personally
