Iam 26 M. I did my civil engineering in 2018 and then worked as a civil engineer for a year then covid happened and i taught myself coding and got a job in a small startup and worked there as a software engineer for 1 year and now my father wants me to take over his business (manufacturing and packaging of mineral water) Which he is running for the past 8 years. My parents only chose enroll me in civil engineering which i regret now because that field is very bad and so not suitable for me and now with the business also they are forcing me to do so because they dont want to sell it.

The thing is what i really like is making youtube videos which iam doing side by side because when i was working 9-5 as a software engineer i had all the time outside of my job for my youtube channel. But now that iam again helping my dad in his business eventually i have to take over everything. In this business we have to work 12 hours a day and 7 days a week (mostly be present at the factory and just monitor people). People who will be suggesting to hire someone, here you cant trust most of the people because the transaction is mostly done with cash.

Regarding my youtube its not a big channel but its doing good recently…i atleast want some free time to make youtube videos and edit them (which takes a lot of time) and i cant tell my parents about youtube because they have a mindset of the old generation so they can’t understand it.

The money from the business is decent but i just cant seem to sit here the whole day do some 2-3 hours of work 24/7 without any weekends. I just dont see myself doing this for the next 20 years. Iam really passionate about my youtube and i know i will pop off one day.

My plan was to work 9-5 and do youtube in the remaining time. Youtube is my long term goal.

What are your thoughts about this? Should i take over the business and give very less time to youtube or do my 9-5 and do youtube side by side?

Hey bro i acnt relate to you much As i have some but small problem with my family As per me you should join and expand you business fully but catch is that you can transform your business to next level means you will be required to spend less time and start doing youtube i know it will take long about 10 years but you can continue youtube share your journey which will surely boost your youtube .you can also bring technology to your factory you need to work hard . I THINK first option will be too difficult as your family will surly pressure you from every angle i ment emotional tooo. I think sooo

    1. Youtube is a crap shoot. To actually make a viable living, long term, is questionable. You’d need to make a big hit now so that could carry you for the rest of your life because there’s no telling what the media world will look like in 10 years.

    2. If you don’t want to work at your parents business, don’t. But you should figure out something. Big picture, it sounds pretty clear that you need a job that allows you free time to try and make your Youtube channel work. That sounds like engineering to me.

Engineers get paid solid to good wages and generally speaking, work a steady 40 hour week. Their weeks, again generally speaking, aren’t too hard and leave time after work and on weekends to explore hobbies. So I’d say go get an engineering job somewhere and make it work.

I get you’re not ready to 100% adult. It sounds like you don’t like working too much. There are a lot of people out there like that. Big picture, you need to get a 9-5, clock in, do what’s required, and clock out. There are lots of jobs like that out there. But you need to just suck it up and do it.

Lower rungs of engineering is really hard. You for sure work more than 40 hours per week.

Yes i just left last 9-5 job to help my dad and i have offers from new companies which is enough for a living. I didnt mean that i will only do youtube and stuff. My main thing was a software job and youtube as a side hustle.

Hmm I manage a family business. I’m pretty content with my life man. I still have time to start other business that bolster / horizontally integrate into my family business. It’s been 10 years. I work 24/7 no weekends like you in the beggining, once you have the hang of things it gets better.

    Hey OP

You’ve got a family business. That’s a good starting point. And you’ve got a background in software engineering, which is fantastic.

    My advice:

    • work in your family business for a year or so, and learn everything you can.
    • create systems, start to delegate work to others and try to shift to digital payment modes.
    • around the same time, hire people to help you with your YouTube. You have the resources, and you can use that to grow your business and YouTube.

Now, YouTube has a lot of potential, but why would you lose the gold you have now in favor of a potential diamond? Not to mention- you really won’t be able to work 3 hours a day in any other job, why would you expect that in here?

In the initial phases your work will be harder. But don’t mind it, once you learn everything, it’ll get easier. And even if you don’t have passion for it, you can still build a good business- a lot of it is about hard work.

Wow. Got the world handed to you and you complain. Are you grateful for anything? If you hate it so much quit.

There are millions of us grinding it out every effing day to avoid being an employee. Wow.

Don’t listen to these bitter people on here.

Life is too short to hate what you do, let alone hate a business that you own and operate. That’s a lose lose for you and the business.

Follow your dream and live the life you want. Your engineer degree is a great fallback should your other efforts not work out.
