Just thinking about the 3 years for prospects to improve philosophy that JD and Saleh agree on and has been implemented so far.
I have to say I agree in principle, and obviously they don’t default apply it to everyone as many players were dumped for different reasons like character/attitude or performance (Morgan as an example).
But with QB it is double edged sword as we have seen. The QB position is so valuable that when you hit it changes the direction of a franchise. People can call coaches “leaders” but QBs give the team the real morale they need in long, difficult seasons. Offense and defense both fight to their last breath when they can hope the QB will pull out last minute heroics or carry a lead.
I don’t fault JD and Saleh for giving Zach every chance to improve, while it sank the team mostly there were always signs that he might flip the switch. “Flipping the switch”, “something clicks”, “getting it”, these are all ways to describe the moment or moments when the game slows down for a player and they improve. There is no secret method to this and it isn’t guaranteed to happen obviously but they did give Zach as many chances as they could in the hopes that repetition and experience would be the factor that helped him turn the corner. I can’t fault them for that, they had to try, not for any reason other than he showed the ability and if they didn’t try and he did it elsewhere that would be the real malpractice. The potential to hit and turn the franchise around was so great they really had to try.
They still went for Aarod hoping for the same franchise altering result from a different source and people can debate all the decisions or lack thereof for personnel, draft, etc. and whether or not I agree with their philosophy I can understand their reasoning. They did put their jobs on the line backing ZW too it has a cost to them as well and people are calling for their jobs as a result. So I appreciate their attempt and conviction, right or wrong, that is what leadership is, even if leading over a cliff.
Do they practice what they preach?
How has JD grown in 5 years? Saleh as he approaches 3? Things on the upswing?
