So I’ve had my 1TB OLED for just under a week now and everything about the hardware itself is completely fine. Problem is SteamOS decided it would start randomly crashing a lot today…
First time it happened was when I went to turn the device off via Steam menu after I got done with a long download (roughly 1.5 hrs). As it was shutting down the screen just went black. Then it restarted itself with the “Verifying installation…” message. Didn’t think much of it, since my 512GB LCD would also derp out every once in a while.
Kept the unit off for about a half an hour to grab something to eat. Came back, turned it back on, and went to change my controller layout before running the game for the first time. As I’m in the middle of adjusting some controller settings the device randomly shuts off AGAIN. And once again I get the “Verifying installation” message.
This is something that just started happening today. Wasn’t an issue all last week or the weekend. I’ve lost count of how many SteamOS updates this thing went through since I first powered it on (it was a lot). But long story short it’s the latest “stable” channel version of SteamOS. It’s also in stock configuration with no weird mods or third-party apps installed (just to rule all that stuff out).
I’ve also got a 512GB LCD model, but that one’s still runnin’ like a champ and is 100% stable after applying all the latest updates. So I’m not sure if this is software bug specific to the OLED model? Or whether it’s a hardware issue that I should RMA for? I guess I’ve got a few more days to decide before my 14-day return window ends. Just wondering if any other OLED owners are experiencing this.
