I think we can all agree that the construction of this roster is not going to cut it.
The annual Turner scapegoating has begun once again, with many of us missing the bigger picture. While Myles is by no means a good rebounder, our rebounding issues are not his fault. We need our wings to be good rebounders, so that when Myles helps off his man there is someone to clean up the boards. Obi Toppin has shown flashes of being a good rebounder, but his tendency is to leak out in transition rather than crash. Hopefully Jarace can develop quickly so he can help us on the defensive end while not being an offensive liability.
I know this may piss some people off, but I don’t see Mathurin as a valid long-term second option next to Tyrese, let alone ever making an all-star team. I think the most likely outcome for Mathurin’s development is to fit into a role like Malik Monk: a great bench scorer.
At least we have seen some promise from Jalen Smith and Aaron Nesmith. Nembhard has been shaky with turnovers and shooting the 3, but I think he will be a very good backup guard for his career.
We brought Bruce Brown in for his defense, and while at some points it has been underwhelming, I think this is mainly due to us attempting to use him to cover everything up as a point of attack defender. I think Bruce’s talents mainly lie in helping off the ball and playing the passing lanes.
No one can say anything to convince me that Buddy Hield has a net positive influence on our team. We don’t have enough good defenders to be able to hide him off the ball, but even then, I would doubt his ability to guard a stationary shooter. Trade him ASAP.
Knicks fan here. Obi Toppin doesn’t “leak out.” As soon as the ball is shot he has his hand up and is sprinting down the court like he’s the same 28 year old man playing at D3 Dayton against 19 year old future JV coaches.
