Who’s everyone’s QB1 next year coming out of the draft. Thought it would be cool to see this post this time next year and see who the real couch GMs are. I think Penix is the best QB in college right now but his age has most people concerned and he’s had his share of injuries. Caleb Williams was most people’s QB1 until a couple weeks ago, then I think most people fell in love with Maye. But the past 3 weeks he’s looked bad against weak ACC defenses. Right now everyone is raving about Jayden Daniel’s TD to INT ratio and comparing him to Burrow with Joe having much better WRs. Who cares where we might draft if we had the 1st pick and didn’t have to sell the farm to get it who are you pounding the table for? I have to say Daniels he’s done great this year and he could be the next great Mobile QB.
My belief, based on a lifetime of watching football, is that a QB is only as good as his offensive line and his coach. Teams that excel at both areas win, teams that don’t, lose. O’Connell is more than good enough to win if he’s properly coached and properly protected.
I also believe that nearly no QB is a sure thing. For every sure thing that panned out, 10 more sure things were busts. The only certainty is that when you draft a QB early, you have to pay him a fortune. We’ve seen this time and time again.
If the Raiders absolutely must draft a QB, I hope it’s J.J. McCarthy. He’ll probably be available when they draft, and he has the most potential of anyone who is also likely to be available then. That said, I’d rather they focus entirely on the offensive line and their defense. If they trade up, I hope it’s to draft a tackle like Olu Fashanu or Joe Alt. QBs are easy to find in later rounds (Brock Purdy anyone?) but tackles aren’t.
Before anything, the team needs a coach. Jim Harbaugh is the obvious choice. If they can’t get him, there are some promising offensive coordinators, but, as we learned with our most recent coaching hire, they come with some risk. A proven winner like Harbaugh should be the top choice.
