Key words, ‘within this parliament’. Quote:
Burnham said he would not be proposing any changes in this parliament, but admitted he would like the country to be a part of the bloc again within his lifetime.
He also claims he won’t ‘move ahead of the public’, but in aggregate all of the most recent opinion polls give pretty consistent pro-remain sentiment.
I want to see an opinion poll that explicitly mentions joining Schengen and the Euro before even starting to negotiate anything related with the UK rejoining.
I’m pretty sure Ireland would happily join Schengen if the uk did. The only reason they didn’t is that the uk didn’t.its probably pretty clear now that not being in either Schengen or eu has not eliminated migrants. In fact, all signs point to more low skilled economic migrants, rather then high skilled eu migrants.
We won’t have to join the euro so it’s not really necessary to poll. Bit like asking how people feel about a federal Europe.
Like Denmark, the UK negotiated an opt-out for joining the Euro. But this opt-out would not automatically carry over if the UK rejoined. That means the UK would have to adopt the Euro just like any other member but they would have to meet the convergence conditions and part of those conditions is joining ERM II (exchange-rate mechanism) which is voluntary. So they could stall the adoption indefinitely by not joining ERM II just like Sweden, Poland, Czechia, Hungary and Romania.
Unless the EU does something mindbogglingly stupid like letting the UK keep the opt-outs, it will either have to join the Euro, or monkey around with economy numbers like Sweden to not meet the criteria to join the Euro.
Snap election incoming?
Doesn’t sound like Lab’s style, but it would be interesting.
Opinion polls are one thing but I think this would need to be a manifesto pledge (easiest option) or a new referendum on rejoining.
