I am playing Horizon Zero Dawn and haven’t gotten to the first main event, but it gives me this feeling like if I upgrade all my equipment now it might be for nothing. I know that is not the case, I looked it up, but what are some games that are the worst offenders? One I can think of is Aerith in the original FF7.

Metroid Prime 2 or 3. Towards the end you get a super gun. It becomes your only weapon. You have it for a significant amount of time, and you use it to defeat the big bad.

Why did I get all those missiles and bombs and upgrade my gun?

Scrolled down through and didn’t see it posted but you’re good to upgrade your gear in HZD. One section you’ll lose your items but it’s only for like 10 minutes and then you get it all back as if nothing happened

    Shadow of the tomb raider.

Dozen or so cutscenes where you get captured and forced into some tedious boring stealth sections becos the story is stupid

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the worst offender. They constantly take your weapons away, and then your whole camp and upgrades are thrown into the trash partway through, lol.

Any game with hardcore mode on it (when you die you don’t come back)

Planescape: Torment - you lose all your team upon entering the final area, I could not finish the game as they had all the charms in their inventory (potions). I guess it’s time to finally replay this classic.
