I like Justin Fields the person and the leader but I don’t know if he can ever be a great QB. My question is, is he good enough?
Yes, we can draft another QB with pick 1 or 4 (or whatever) but we can get a boatload of picks by trading down from #1. Most highly drafted QBs don’t turn into great NFL QBs and our franchise sucks at developing them.
As the defense is playing well, the OLine looks solid, can we go forward and compete with JF1?
Personally, I think if we boot Getsy and get an OC who actually builds a plan around Fields, we may be able to compete by investing in OL, DL and WR.
And if we win 2-3 more games, we might be stuck with the entire front office for next year anyway.
Fields has all the tools you need for a good QB. I think if he were to go somewhere with the right coaches and supporting cast, he’d be a playoff-caliber player. Maybe not a true blue chipper, but good enough to make a run.
If that’s the case (big if), then why not try to make it work here? To trade him in for an unknown rookie is another blind stab at getting the position right. He’s got more talent than anyone we’ve had since Cutler, all he needs is to be coached up and game planned for properly.
I’d love to see the Bears hire an offensive coord that has already been a head coach and isn’t trying to get promoted into that role. The problem with the young Shanahanistas is that they’re all trying to make their system the next hot thing. They’re in it for their career, not necessarily to get the most out of the QB they have.
Gimme an older guy that just wants to win and will cater to Field’s strengths.
Get MHJ and then trade the other pick for a haul, stack the trenches with real, fierce, young talent, and let Flus continue the progress the defense is making.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, because I wanted to shove a pitchfork up Flus’ ass just last week. But that defense is playing as inspired as I’ve seen since the first five games of 2018, and then going back to the Lovie days.
Fields can work. Get him the right coach and watch it hum.
