Anytime I criticized the deal Howard got, I’d get downvoted. Apparently having a rookie QB was a good enough reason to extend an average tackle with top 5 money for their position. Now, he’s out for the year after average right tackle play. I said from the get go it made no sense to overpay for an average lineman. Now we have a bad contract for the next 4 years. We will be cutting him, and it’ll cost $10.8 M in dead cap to do so In 2 years unless he somehow becomes a player he’s never been (Elite).
I hope everyone understands why you franchise average first round picks that haven’t shown that they’re an elite level talent. He should’ve either been traded or franchise tagged. He never did anything to justify the contract and no one would’ve paid him that money on the open market.
I kept hearing having a rookie QB was a good reason to pay Howard, but you don’t overpay average players. I hope this sub has learned a lesson in not overpaying average players just because you have a rookie QB.
Username checks out and still getting downvoted to oblivion.
Most GMs save their franchise tags for RBs nowadays. There’s no sense in paying them multi-year deals with the amount of churn from injuries that naturally come from the role.
I think your argument can be made that he is overpaid and lacks a mean streak required to a top 5 guy. I personally don’t love the deal as Fant could do his job almost as well at a fraction of the cost.
The reason they did it is we lack talent. I believe we cut or trade him in the final year of his contract when his dead money isn’t as impactful.
Running a victory lap on a guy who just lost his season and only did everything his coaches asked of him is pathetic af. He prioritized the team over himself and played a position he doesn’t like that he’s been vocal about not liking in the past because the team needed him to.
Grow up man.
He’s a good Tackle and it’s a great contract.
He was playing out of position because the team needed him to. Lesser men would have refused to be such team players.
Why comment when you don’t watch football?
He’s been a very good young RT and we have an all-time rookie QB; extending him was the 100% right move to make.
You’re conflating his RT abilities with his LG abilities. 2 different positions.
Seems like you probably got downvoted because of your attitude about things.
Nah, people on this sub think Howard is elite when he isn’t despite him doing nothing to justify the contract.
It was mostly about CJ needing a competent offensive line, but I thought we could’ve replaced him easily with a veteran in free agency, trade, or the draft because he’s just average.
People are literally telling you he isn’t elite, dude was playing a position he was asked to.
If he wasn’t elite, then we vastly overpaid for him for no reason other than desperation. Good franchises don’t do that.
Definitely an overpay at the time but the hope was he would continue on an upward trajectory, which did not pan out. He can be cut in 2025 with $10.8 mil in dead cap and $9.7 mil in savings, or more likely in 2026 with only 4.5 dead and 18 in savings. He’ll either agree to a pay cut/restructure in 2025 or be cut by 2026, so the contract is not as bad as you suggested with being paid as a top 5 rt for the next 4 years.
I rather have dawand jones. Tytus lacks a mean streak
