It feels like half the best players in the league are all pass rushers. If the priority is to get better at offense, you have to start with keeping your QB upright - and we’ve been miserable at that for years now.
I know Belicheck screwed the Jet’s plans last year trading with the Steelers - but JD has gotta find a way to get it done this year
I agree…
Draft a top five OL prone to injury .
If Rodgers is here, the entire draft should be o-linemen and pass catchers. They have to go all-in on the offense.
Only way they draft a first-round quarterback is if Douglas and Saleh (or Rodgers) are gone and the team’s already committed to a rebuild.
The only strategy Joe Douglas has not employed in Rd1 is trade back I think.
Maybe it’s time to trade back to acquire more picks and swing for base hits not home runs.
With the number of highly touted QB’s this year like Williams, Maye, Nix, Daniels, & Penix Jr., the Jets will likely be able to find a partner to trade down with.
If there are enough tackles like Fashanu, Alt, Fuaga, Latham, or Mims available that could be worth it, although I lean towards just taking the tackle you want (I like Fashanu & Alt) and taking a QB that falls.
We don’t know exactly who’ll declare for the draft but it seems to be loaded at QB. If the Jets can grab the offensive lineman they like in the first round, they can probably still get a guy they like to sit behind Rodgers. After the 5 QBs I mentioned there are still guys like Ewers, McCarthy, Gabriel, Beck etc. Guys like Hartman & Pratt have also been getting a lot of attention. If Jordan Travis declares he’ll probably be around a little later in the draft too due to his injury.
I’m not a big college football fan so someone please correct me if I’m wrong, I just think we can probably grab the OT we want and still able to draft a talented QB that can sit and learn behind Rodgers given how deep this draft class is at QB.
IMO, the Jets should focus on OL as you and others stated. However, if Marvin Harrison Jr. is on the board when we pick, we have to pick him up. Him, Wilson, and Gibson would be a good trio. If he’s not available, they can pick an OL. If an OL is projected to go lower, they can trade down to trade their 1 for lower 1 and a 2 or 3 and then go OL. The Jets don’t need a defensive player, TE, or a QB. Especially in the higher rounds.
If we can have an OL that would give up a season low in sacks every year and perhaps an average of 5+ seconds protection for the QB, that would be worth it. That’s just my opinion, though.
If Joe Alt is there, you have to take him, but they should surely consider trading back even if it is to grab another late 2nd or 3rd round pick if the opportunity presents itself. Too many holes to fill on this team.
I would address the QB position by running it back with Rodgers (obviously), signing a legitimate backup QB (Tannehill, Brissett, Winston, Minshew, etc) and draft a QB to develop over the next couple of years in the middle rounds of there is one worth taking.
I would rather fashanu to alt. Would obviously be happy with either but Fashanu is a top tier pass protection prospect. We need pass protection more than anything.
