The Timberwolves now sit at 13-4, the current #1 seed in the Western Conference, almost 1/4 through the season.

Rudy Gobert defensive rating: 102.3 (#1 in the league)

KAT defensive rating: 104 (#2 in the league this year / averaged 109 historically)

Timberwolves: 106.6 (#1 in the league)

If they make the finals this year; are we still saying it was an overpay?

It’s probably always going to be an overpay unless they go to the Finals, or at least a couple WCFs, but it’s looking better now that their top 3 are actually playing together.

Of course. But then again, there would be almost no trades that fail by this metric. That’s the whole goal of making win now deals.

They’re a good team, but I’m getting the 20-21 Jazz vibes. Funny enough 2 of the starters from that team also start in Minnesota

I think that what this does for Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels as young cornerstones, this is worth it. This puts them in contendership at an early age. If they are around in 5-8 years and still trying to compete to titles on this team, they will be extremely experienced and hardened.

This was the whole point of the trade imo. It was exactly what Tim Connelly and Chris Finch said at the press conference introducing Gobert. The point was to create a winning environment for Ant and Jaden so they will be playoff seasoned and well developed in their primes. The want to create a winning culture and want Ant, Jaden and KAT to win early and often so they can build winning habits.

Tbh I don’t care. We bought the house and it’s a nice fucking house :)

    I’m enjoying it!

But something that is underrated is how he’s affecting the development of Ant, KAT, Jaden and our other young players. He’s teaching our young players and even masterminding the defense with the coaches. He designed the Wolves defense with Finch and Turner. That’s a permanent imprint that will last with this franchise long after he’s gone. Ant, Jaden and KAT’s development is 100% my priority because they are the best assets for this franchise (not 4 picks). What he’s teaching them will stay with them the rest of their careers.

Timberwolves were probably the #1 team Rudy could succeed on. Definitely a great combination. Would be exciting to see them make the finals!

If it yields a championship I think I’m “overpaying” every time.

Even if we “win” the trade, it’s an overpay. Simply because we seemed to be only out bidding ourselves.

We got fleeced, but both the Jazz and the Wolves can come out winners.

I still think it was an overpay but one that was worth it. I definitely feel like if they were more patient they could’ve gotten Gobert for less

Jon K (Wolves beat reporter) said they did consider other options and stopped talking to Utah since they kept demanding McDaniels was in the trade package.

They looked at other candidates and had other trade talks but kept coming back to Gobert. Then it was a “well what are we waiting for? This is the exact guy we need”. So they were like “whatever, here’s 2 extra picks but we keep McDaniels.” Don’t know how much more patient you can be because Utah would have just kept Gobert.

This is my opinion too. Utah wasn’t going to let him go without an “overpay.” Minnesota knew they were “overpaying.” It was a matter of believing in your move and paying the asking price.

In other words, it may be above market value, but they aren’t stupid and didn’t get duped. They knew what they were doing. Only time will tell if they were right.
