I’d like to replace my ISP router with a third party router (My ISP allows it; I also have separated ONT). My main uses are:
- Having a reliable and featureful OS on it (like PFSense, OPNSense, or other)
- Advanced firewall options (I’d like to put my NAS in a DMZ)
- Run PiHole (Optional?)
Many suggest using a desktop PC as a router, and more specifically, the Wyse 5070 Extended looks to be very popular due to its small footprint and extendability through PCI-e.
Also, with a 4 2.5GB ports NIC and a Wireless card, it could also act as a switch and access point.
Is there any catch i’m unaware of? Would it be a good choice?
This question may look naive, but I’m using this as an opportunity to learn. Thank you in advance for your help.
