I have often seen comments on reddit or youtube claiming that messi could have broken his 91 goals record (2012) in 2013 if it wasn’t for that injury. They usually mention an insane 46 goals in 32 games before april statistic to back up this up.

I was bored so I looked up messis match history and counted the goals/games myself and compared both full years and also the stats up to april.

2012:

32 goals in 24 games  03/04/2012 (Day/Month/Year for confused americans)

Messi had 46 goals in 33 games 05/05/2012 and ended the year at 91 goals in 69 games.

Now 2013:

23 goals in 22 games 02/04/2013

Messi then scored 46 goals in 47 games for the year 2013.

The 46 in 32 are literally taken from his 12/13 league campaign which have nothing to do with a record for a calendar year specifically lol. So am I missing something important here or are people simply to lazy to look up the stats and just repeat what they have heard before??

Even without the injury it is unlikely that Messi could have once again even come close to the 80 goals mark let alone 90 lol. The 91 goal are probably a totally abnormal year even for messi standarts. Also ignoring the goals for 1 second. Playing 69 games in a year is totally unthinkable for most players too.

The fact people are even discussing this shows how football has turned into a sport where fans worship the individual and not the team. Sad.
