Let’s say hypothetically we traded for Siakam. Me personally I am not a fan of it, with his age, contract demands and overall role in the team I don’t think it would be a great fit.

But anyways let’s say we did and he walked at the end of the season, would it maybe not all be doom and gloom? Essentially we’d probably have to trade Hunter, Griffin and possibly capela (probably picks too which is the most annoying part). If Siakam ends up leaving us in FA, we would have freed up his big ass contract, as well Hunters and possibly capelas. If I’m not mistaken that would leave us with a decent amount of cap space. This could then be utilised in the FA restructure the roster and target players who better fit our style of play. We’d have a lot more room to make moves instead of being tied in a bundle with a clog of players.

Again I’m against this trade, I think it seems panicky and doesn’t make too much sense, however am I tripping to say it’s not the complete end of the world if he’s traded to us then leaves?

On the contrary it would be quite stupid to trade multiple pieces + picks for a rental, when we could save them for some assets that would actually have a future in Atlanta. I guess trying to find the positives if this potentially happens.

I’ll admit, the intricate details surrounding cap-space and picks are ever so slightly out of my depth. So from a novice-like perspective (to play the opposition) it seems just a wee bit bad to gut any semblance of depth (or draft picks) for a player who likely walks. And even though what you mentioned, “making sure they fit our style of play,” is definitely what we should do, I’m not sure the selections amongst Free Agency would have what we need to restructure into contending basketball.

But yeah, like you, I’m against the trade personally.

not sure if i’m reading it right, but according to the site i’ll link at the end of the comment, we’re 56mm over the cap next year. getting off capela, hunter and griffin basically just brings us back to the cap line - we wouldn’t have room to sign a significant free agent.

we’re in a good situation to trade players and take back money with the trade exception we generated in the jc swap (and subsequent deals), but as far as i can tell, that’s the limit of our flexibility. we will not be players in the free agent market at any point in the trae young era. a trade could bring us a player and moves on the margins on free agency can bring us depth and vets.
