I will be taking some family photos for a young family (parents + 6 month old) this weekend. They cannot afford to pay a photographer and I told them I will try but have never taken family photos before. I have a canon rebel T3 I will be using. I would appreciate any tips/tricks. This family doesn’t have any photos with the baby yet so I’d like to get a few good ones.

Take photos throughout the whole process… While they are preparing and setting up etc.

They may expect you to know what you’re doing… Part of photographing people is making them comfortable. Be laid back, let them know if they want genuine photos they should relax, maybe not consider it an “event”. (Edit: but maybe not let them know as in saying it bluntly, lol. But ya know, let em know it’s good to get loose.)

Scope out the place you’ll be shooting. Sunrise, sunset, when the best light is and what direction. You don’t want to go to a beautiful area and realize the sun is in the wrong position for utilizing the scenery.

The baby will probably be easier to photography than the parents… They don’t know how to not be genuine.

Look at other photographers work. Look at how they positioned their clients. Collect photos of positions you like and use them. Put some on your phone so you can get ideas on the spot if you need to.

I think the biggest thing to take note of is the lighting and keeping them at ease.

If you’re over 21 maybe offer something to drink to help them relax. Depending on the people… Maybe a wine.

The photos will only be as good as you make them feel. Imo.
