when i download a game / movie or update anything, my ethernet crashes but not the home wifi, and its a real pain because i have the reboot the router and disconnect my whole family for ten or so minutes. (this has been going on for about 2 years but ive had enough and i really dread calling the provider since they have terrible customer support)
ive tried:
switching lan cable
reinstalling ethernet driver
changing some ethernet settings from another forum post i found
limiting the download speed

You need a new router, preferably one that doesn’t do double duty as a WiFi AP. There are lots of options. Find something that can run one of the open source router options or go for something more pro-sumers. I was in a similar situation, having to reboot my router every couple days. I’m pretty happy with my Edge router X + Unifi AP setup from ubnt. I was hesitant to spend the money, but it was worth it for me. Be prepared to learn a lot more about networking.
