Unpopular Opinion.
I think trading for Chris Paul would help solve some of the culture problems and leadership roles that this team desperately needs to address. I know Chris Paul is dunked on a lot by NBA fans, but this move could be crucial to helping us turn around the ship while still being able to develop our core pieces.
The biggest two assets he’d bring to the Pistons that we need desperately is a reliable playmaker who’ll help clean-up the sloppy passes and turnover issues, and an established leader & veteran presence.
Just imagining now from an on-court perspective, he would help clean up some of the issues on the offensive side that we struggle with in playmaking and facilitating. But, his most important and crucial contribution isn’t just his play per se, but his role in the helping of developing our core pieces on the roster.
For instance, we all know Cade is a turnover machine. He’s thrown extremely sloppy passes this season and has made some questionable decisions, but with CP3 here to mentor him, help him clean up his playmaking and passing, while also teaching him how to get the whistle (sorry, but Cade needs to learn how to flop), this would prove pivotal into pushing Cade into that next gear he’s shown flashes of and we all know that he has.
Same with Ivey, CP3 would be instrumental in his development as well in facilitating. Then you have Duren, now you have someone that’ll find him down low on offense for those quick, easy inside baskets. Then you’ll have someone who notices the off-ball cutting that Ausar does and that’ll reward him for it, and I just smile in excitement of a new lob city possibility with CP3 facilitating and then Ivey, Ausar, Duren, and Bagley liable to catch a oop at any time.
We’ll be able to run a real offense, then you’d have the Monty and CP3 connection. You’ll have someone to hold the locker room and players accountable but still be a huge role in their development and growth, while at the same time having a proven player who’s shown to transform young floundering teams into play-off contending squads (he’s done it for Phoenix and OKC). In my mind, it’s a no brainer. Surround the team with shooters through trades and we’ll be on the up again and hopefully a play-in team in the next season or two.
