It’s a good one for sure, but for recent years I’d say 2017 was the best, and overall it’s hard (maybe impossible) to beat 1998.
You know the year is great when even niche communities like the FGC agree that the new release (Street Fighter 6) might be the new peak for such a long running franchise.
We are eating so good. Not to mention amazing indie games too like Stray Gods, Shadow gambit (rip studio), Bomb Rush, Chained Echoes, Sea of Stars, Chants of Sennaar and I am sure many more that are escaping me rn.
2023 is definitely one of the best years for gaming, but interestingly I feel like it also is one that has some biggest variation of the highest highs, and lowest lows.
On one end you have games like Baldurs Gate 3 and Tears of the Kingdom, which IMO are some of the greatest of all time. You also have a lot of very other strong games like Spider-Man 2, Alan Wake 2, Mario Wonder. Tons of impressive indies and remasters as well like Dave the Diver and Dead Space.
However on the other end there are some disappointingly mediocre and flat out comically bad games. Some big games like Starfield, Forspoken, Callisto Protocol failed to live up to expectations. Gollum and Kong represent some of the worst modern games ever made by decently sized studios. And we had the usual slew of lazy sports games like EA FC and UFC 5
This is the first year I can remember where I didn’t get every game I wanted within a week after release. I would have spent like 500 dollars.
