I am a Brazilian living in the Netherlands. My partner is dutch (my reason for living here) and very lovely. However I can’t affirm this for the rest of the country hahah I don’t really like the dutch mentality of “Why would I laugh if there’s no joke” (bit Calvinist), it’s deeply rooted on their culture and people and for me that’s just too bad. When someone at my work asks me what I think of the Netherlands, I can’t refrain from saying that I think the quality of life is great but I don’t really enjoy the people/culture… and then of course the person listening to this looks at me with this funny look probably thinking “Well, if you don’t like it here, the door is right there” which I agree. I mean, why to live in a place where you don’t enjoy the people and the culture? And I definetly understand and see why locals could feel offended by this. I am just too honest to be able to lie about it. So I was curious to know from other expats, how do you deal with this? You just move? You live with it? Is it normal?
