The spurs are special in general in that the front office and coaching staff are in total lockstep. Pop does not have to worry about getting fired if it takes a while to implement a new scheme or culture. At the same time, Pop knows that this is the only year that it will be acceptable to fans, media and the players (not that he cares about the first two) to lose so much as everyone knows this is a young team and Victor isn’t quite ready yet. If this is true, then Pop is forced to accelerate development of the team in order to get a complete picture of who is going to fit best around Victor. It’s basically a try out year for everyone not named Victor, and in order to effectively accomplish that, Pop has to experiment more than usual and things are going to get ugly. Sure, this season, Victor’s own development may be slightly hampered by not having a good team around him but in the end, I believe this strategy will maximize the number of competitive seasons with the spurs.
