Why did LeBron go to the NBA right after highschool but Carmelo did one year of college? Was Carmelo not good enough to go straight out of highschool?

Melo promised his mom he’d go to college and he says he liked the idea and enjoyed the experience of going to college. He didn’t want to declare after winning Syracuse’s first title but Boeheim told him to. He did have bad grades that also put his availability in potential jeopardy.

According to him he planned on going for 3 years but since they won there wasn’t much to do and his coach blessed him leaving. That’s if I remember the story correctly.
