Edit: I meant to say a GAMING PC in the title

I feel like im in such the minority here, which isn’t bad. I’ve never had a “gaming” PC. I saved up and bought a MacBook laptop for college years ago. The only time I would game on a PC would have been coolmath.com back in the computer lab days. I’ve been a console boy my whole life. I play on PS only, but wanted something to emulate old games and play some AAA titles portablely. I picked up a Switch OLED about 7 months ago, but between the high cost of nearly all games and how restrictive it feels, I wanted more.

All of this is so foreign to me. I’ve played emulators on my phone before, but that’s about my extent of knowledge. Getting a SD and seeing things mentioned like “Proton” and “TDP” sounds like a foreign language to me, lol.

I’m learning, slowly. I’ve got Emudeck installed and I’ve got a decent understand of Desktop mode. I’m not even 30 but I sound like an old man. How many of you are like me? I’ve learned many things only due to owning a Steam Deck!

I have a gaming pc but for most major games, I’m glad that they can be played now for a much more reasonable price. Also if someone really wanted to they could get a dock and plug in a monitor, keyboard, etc and use it like a desktop when not carrying it around.

Sold my gaming pc a few years ago and bought a small notebook. Switched to console gaming and bought a deck half a year ago, this setup is all i need. If a want a AAA-title i buy it for my ps5, if i want nostalgia i play on my deck, i dont need it for newer games.

I was always a PC gamer and a big fan of portable gaming so I own now about 8-9 years old gaming laptop (when was GTX980m released?) and also Nintendo handhelds.

Deck was announced in a perfect time when I was beginning to think about laptop upgrade so I bought the deck instead. Funnily, my old laptop can still run the games a bit better but Deck is just more comfy.

I still think of a laptop upgrade mostly because I’d also like to get into VR gaming but as a fan of portable gaming I’m satisfied with the Deck performance for now.

Rn sold my pc to buy a steam deck. And now after reading tons of post about dead pixels or other issues, I’m having anxiety about deck coming broken. Also cuz I’m from Ukraine repairing it it will took maybe a month for delivering to valve and back

Been using Mac & consoles for my whole life. SteamDeck came at the right time as I was looking to simplify. So now I just use Mac & SteamDeck

My last gaming PC was almost 10 years ago. Had a GTX 780 in it.

Have no plans on getting another gaming PC anytime in the foreseeable future. I don’t even play my Series X and PS5 anymore. With the Switch and Steam Deck I am all into handheld gaming.

You can pretty much use the game deck rating based on your experience with a PC, platinum rated games no experience and down from there.

As an experienced PC gamer I’ve never bothered with TDP and you pretty much ignore that for every game.

in terms of Proton unfortunately its something you will have to interact with… my advice, if you are considering buying a game, check protondb first it will let you know if there is anything to worry about

I owned one and it got me into pc gaming again. I had one years ago with an old library. Remembering how awesome steam is, I started gaming more on pc. Still love my deck, I also love streaming to it from the pc for stuff like Darktide that doesn’t run well etc.

i do have a like…6 years old “gaming pc” shortly before covid i was planning on a major update but the hardware prices where ridicilous. So i opted for the deck instead. My “gaming pc aka the glorified potato” i only use for RTS game and the occasional team based shooter. everyhing else i use the deck for. Got sevral larger screens at home so no biggie. Love the thing
