The defense lacks talent. AG knows that this defense isn’t any good so he tries his best to mask that fact by playing zone, if he were to play man they would get murdered on every play. He’s hoping that the D-line can generate enough pressure so the secondary isn’t exposed on every play but (sorry to break the news to you guys) the D-line isn’t great either. That’s why Dan and Brad wont fire AG because they gave him little to work with.
