Console generation last somewhere between 5 to 8 years so it is fair to say that 3 years is a substantial amount in any console generation. Both PS5 and Xbox Series launched in November 2020 during the middle of the COVID pandemic and were initially hampered by supply chain issues.
What do you feel are the improvements these consoles and the games have made over those in the 8th generation?
Which games have been the standouts so far?
What are your disappointments with the generation so far?
Should the Nintendo Switch be considered to be a part of this generation despite its hybrid nature and relatively underpowered specs compared to PlayStation and Xbox?
Which trends seem to have emerged so far both in terms of games and game development/ publishers in the last few years?
I’ve never owned a console until this spring. Bought a PS5. I am a lifelong PC gamer.
First, holy crap consoles are legit. Laser focused on gaming they perform way beyond my expectations. I have done a fuckton of PS exclusives for dirt cheap on the premium plus subscription. Bought FF XVI and Spiderman 2. Currently playing SM2 on a 77" OLED with a 14.2 Atmos surround sound system. Very very good stuff.
Shooters suck lol. Will use pc. KBM for those.I’ll buy the next gen as soon as it comes out. For the framerate.
3 years in and I still don’t care to get either of them. Honestly probably won’t at all this gen. Even the good looking stuff is going to come to PC eventually, and I have so much of a backlog that I’m content waiting a year or two.
I just don’t feel like there’s a reason to own any console over another, and certainly not over a PC this gen. I can get Halo, God of War, Horizon, Sea of Thieves, Ratchet, all on my PC. Delayed quite a bit, but that doesn’t really matter to me personally.
My comment will grate to some people, but if you can afford it, then if you are serious about gaming then go PC. The market has changed dramatically over the last few console generations (look at how once SONY PS exclusives now appear on the platform),and simply offers not only the best quality if you can afford to, but makes “generations” kind of obsolete even though you might want to upgrade every few years if you want to keep playing at max settings.
I used to be 100% pro Xbox and Playstation, hence why I can’t play KB/Mouse very well and use a gamepad, but I have not looked back since leaving when I owned an Xbox One and PS4 Pro. Mods are a godsend and with Steam’s 2 hour window for game returns has really pushed the platform, despite top-end hardware shortages and extreme price gouging.
I was going to get a PS5 but the complete shortages for well over a year, I just gave up. VR is important for me, and I welcome PSVR 2 to the mix despite SONY’s walled-garden approach to software. That said, as a former HP Reverb G2 owner and many other PCVR headsets, I am well happy with the move to the Quest 3.
As for the games, I use Gamepass for PC Ultimate, which lets me play day one exclusives like Starfield, Lies of P etc, and I can wait a year or more to play the Playstation exclusives if and when they come.
I game 4K and with an RTX 4090 at the helm, nothing on console will come close for a while yet. CP 2077 one of my top games of all time is just a joy on PC in 4K max settings or in PCVR using the Luke Ross VR mod.
Much more expensive than console gaming for sure, but imo well-worth-it. 100%.
