I was up in the mountains today, and my timing belt snapped about 1/3rd (the width), so it is still hanging on by 2/3rds. The split has introduced a tag end that whips around and hits stuff (which is how I noticed). I decided to leave my car up in some parking lot around 60 miles from my house, quite a bit of snow but it is supposed to warm up this week.

I am between two choices here:

  1. Tow it back (perhaps start a AAA membership, or rent a U-haul truck and trailer because the quote I got was $750 for a tow)
  2. Get a ride back up, cut off the tag end, and drive it home.

I am wondering if it is safe/reasonable to drive it back home 60 miles. What is the worst that will happen if it fully snaps on the highway or anywhere else for that matter?
