I get that he has a lot of great weapons around him, which helps; and people like to talk about yards after carry to buffer his stats. But even if you take that away, he’s still number 1 in air yards per attempt. And the only 3 losses he had came when he was missing a primary target AND critical pass protection from Trent Williams.

The one time in his NFL career that he had an opportunity to lead a game winning drive against the Browns, he put them in a position to win, were it not for the missed FG. And he performed amazingly well in the two playoff games he was able to finish. I mean, if not for the drop, this play shows just how much he balls out when needed.

For those of us who have been watching the 49ers week in and week out for the last few years, Purdy turned this offense around. They were really good before, but as soon as Jimmy went down that last time, the offense immediately shifted into a higher gear. It’s clear that he’s not simply being carried by the talent around him.

What am I missing?

That’s definitely fair. Steve Young was saying the same thing about him and I think that’s the most rational take. I think what gets most frustrating is when people become dismissive of what he’s already achieved. Sustainability is key, but it seems most criticisms seem to suggest that what he’s doing is still not enough.
