So, back to the days of the PS One, PS2, and Xbox 360, I was absolutely in love with horror games. However, it all began to crumble with Resident Evil 6. Since then, I’ve lost my motivation to play horror games as they shifted towards full-blown action, featuring uninspiring plots and uninnovative gameplay.
Sure, there were some good horror games like Dead Space, for example, but they lacked one thing I love the most about horror games - the potential connection with reality.
The last time I played something that truly terrified me was with Outlast 2. My goodness, the possibility of a place like that existing, the connections to the Jim Jones case – it was like a chef’s kiss.
I was a huge fan of the first Alan Wake; it reminded me a lot of a movie I loved called Secret Window. I’ve always paid attention to Remedy’s games since I played the first Max Payne. Sam Lake is such an incredible writer, and Control was a blast.
When they announced Alan Wake 2, I thought I knew what it was going to be like – a survival psychological horror game with a cool story. But, oh boy, I couldn’t have been more wrong.
They’ve built this masterpiece with a complex plot and such an interesting way to develop it that I’m absolutely hooked. This game showed me that invested and talented developers can still bring something new to the table in this hugely neglected genre.
This is just a love letter to Remedy and a call for those of you who were in the same spot as me to give this game a try.
