Hood won’t close - replacement not working

2006 Toyota 4Runner

The hood latch broke (one of the springs had completed corroded and snapped in half). Replaced the hood latch and cable (the retaining clip on the old cable assembly was also broken, so it would not sit in place on the hood latch properly).

I thought this would be a simple enough of a replacement, but the hood still won’t latch down. I’m fairly certain: (1) the latch is attached to the vehicle properly, (2) the ball on the end of the cable is attached to the hood latch assemble properly, and (3) the cable is attached to the lever on the vehicle interior properly.

Am I supposed to be installing in this a specific way that is not blatantly obvious for some reason?
