now just implement proper one-pedal drive on the Macan EV…
Hasn’t this been known for a while?
It doesn’t make sense to me for manufacturers to put money into R&D for their own operating system. Toyota has been doing that for years and it is still horrible. I’ve been using android automotive since September 2021 when I bought my first Volvo and it’s phenomenal. I’m coming from Apple as well. It didn’t even have CarPlay for the first six months but the Google Maps integration is absolutely phenomenal. I use AAOS for navigation, music podcasts etc. because of Volvo data package covers all of that and I use CarPlay for text and telephony.
Toyota’s latest system is pretty good.
This article is a bit unfair to VW. The definition of a car OS is somewhat vague, but Android Runtime for Automotive only provides a small part of the user space of a car OS. Automakers have to deal with a lot of other things, like HAL, device drivers, and the kernel. It’s a daunting task that requires a lot of manpower and money. But, let’s forget about the complicated stuff for now. It’s a good thing that Porsche will be able to use Google Maps and Spotify.
