Finch’s free flowing offense does not work. At this point, I’m not interested in why. Whether it’s because the players can’t figure it out or are too selfish, or if it’s just not that good of scheme, regardless of what the problem is, it needs to change.
This team has no offensive identify and no reliable way to generate offense in the half court.
The half court offense has been awful the last year. In difficult stretches when shots stop falling, the offense breaks down every single time. The ball stops moving, players start hunting for their own shot, and instead of finding open looks, the team is forced into really difficult, well-defended shots over and over again.
It’s not difficult to notice that these massive runs the team gives up coincides with the offense completely stalling.
I don’t care how good the free flowing offensive could or should be or would be if executed correctly. It is not being executed correctly by the teams star players (or if it is, then it’s a dogshit scheme), it has not been executed the last few years.
What this team needs is structure on offense, clear as day. Set plays with specific, defined movement and places that the ball is supposed to go. If Finch cannot figure out how to get these guys to move the ball on their own then it’s time to create more plays that facilitate that for them.
With this current roster, the offense is going to continue to breakdown every time a few shots stop falling. We’ve seen it time and time again.
