Hey all,
I recently took my 2016 Tiguan (75k miles) into the dealership who informed me the timing chain needed to be replaced. The quote was extremely high, so I took it to a local shop instead who told me they wouldn’t work on it as the engine is “burning through fuel very quickly” which is apparently indicative of something worse going on and they don’t want to be liable for future issues. So now I am sitting on ten year old car that might be worth very little? I am not sure exactly what I am looking for here, but maybe a little bit of direction. Is the local shop possibly wrong and I could just get the timing chain replaced and keep driving? Should I just cut my losses and trade it in for $1.5k? Any help is much appreciated!
It’s not throwing codes any longer and is now running smoother after replacing the oil. The oil was the issue, and I believe all this stemmed from the manufacturer not changing the oil 7k miles ago like I paid them to do. The local shop is the one that ultimately changed the oil but says I shouldnt drive it very far because the timing chain is still an issue even though it’s driving fine. The dealership is the one who told me they could only give me $1500 for the car given the work it needed and said it would only sell for $12k after the work, which isn’t true.
I’ll consider taking it to a 3rd shop for diagnostic, but what do I tell them given the engine light is no longer on and it drives fine?
