Those who are thinking tank, where do you think we’d end up? What draft pick would we get? And would you want to play for a team whose fans want them to lose?
I’m not in favor of teams intentionally losing, but if we went on a losing streak I wouldn’t necessarily be upset
I don’t actually want them to “tank”, but I do want them to make important choices that will provide the flexibility they will need to rebuild. In the process of rebuilding, they could land upon a few outstanding players on rookie contracts that unexpectedly make them really competitive and exciting. What’s more likely is they have 2 or 3 growing pains seasons while figuring out who should stay and who they could sell high before finding their footing again – but that’s part of the process of putting the pieces together. I don’t want them to chase a bad record just to get a good draft pick, I want them to hoard assets right now, and to continue doing so until they have the flexibility and the pocket depth to make some deliberate moves – short-term record be damned.
My gut says that the Vikings will pick between 14-20. My hope is that they pick between 6-10…
I’d want to play for a team that isn’t always stuck in mediocrity. Good enough to squeak into the playoffs, but not great enough to get past the Wild Card round. The saying is always the bridesmaid, never the bride is a good way to sum up the Vikings. They are always just barely good enough to make the playoffs, but never good enough to make any noise. Last year was a great season, but the flaws the team was patching blew up in the playoffs and in a big way.
This seems to be the MO for all of Minnesota’s sports teams. Win the regular season at all cost, because you never know what happens…except we all know what happens.
The positive posts in this sub borderline on toxic; talking about any sort of losing or trying to rebuild the team is met with hostility and ridicule and downvotes even if the responses are measured and reasonable - look at the front page right now? There is really no deep discussion on this sub forum. I find better discussions on FootballsFuture or even the main NFL subreddit.
People want to talk about culture? Cousins gave his all to this team and we need to recognize that, but players move on. They have shelf-lives and they have limits. Look at how one or two players can turn around a franchise. Talent begets culture.
Everyone loves to point out the Lions, the Bears…but on the flip side, the Lions after years of losing and being a joke of a team traded away franchise favorite Matthew Stafford for a huge haul, drafted and traded like no one’s business and that talent has turned the culture around in MoTown. There is a huge reason why there is so much positive energy in Detroit is all these smart moves they are making.
Houston dumped Watson and ended up with a huge haul and possible franchise savior in CJ Stroud and Will Anderson.
This team needs to not only rebuild their culture with the young players they are acquiring, but they need talent on defense and they need someone that they can build around for the next decade.
When was the last time you heard the Vikings and Super Bowl in the media? The Favre era? Maybe early in Cousins career with the Vikings. It’s been a LONG time since the Vikings were Super Bowl contenders and even longer since they had multiple seasons where they were the best team in football.
