It’s not a known secret that the jets need an upgrade at Oline once the season has concluded. I know we still have plenty of football to go, but it’s never too early to think about what direction we should go in.
Current oline when it’s was at its best this year
Becton - lanken - McGovern - Tippman - AVT
While this unit was solid, there are major concerns to answer
Does becton get an extension (I think he should),
Lanken will probably need a restructure since we can’t cut him, he will probably start one more year but will be on thin ice
Will we bring back McGovern? Hard to say, he’s been solid but does tippman take over?
Does tippman stay at guard? Or do we move AVT back here?
Does AVT want to stay at tackle? Both of his injuries came at this position and might be at his breaking point here. I can’t imagine what kind of toll this can take on a persons mindset. We have to prepare ourselves for the chance that he moves back inside.
There are three ways we can approach this: Trade, Draft and Free agency
Trade: I will just be blunt and keep this short, it’s unlikely we find our solution this way. There might be some teams like the raiders or commies that would be willing to sell, but in a world where it doesn’t matter if your rebuilding or not, I can’t imagane getting a good deal for a Oline unless they demand a trade (think Trent Williams who we should have traded for but that’s besides the point)
Draft: probably our safest bet. Would like to draft mims, Latham, Barton etc and have them take over tackle.
Free agency. We need to add some lineman, target people with versatility and upside as there aren’t a lot of big names. Vitai, Donavan smith (he’s been meh this year but could take a depth role) etc
Potential line next year:
Becton/lanken (who can be replaced)/tippman (assuming he looks good at center)/AVT/rookie first rounder
Depth includes vatai and other key members.
We shouldn’t expect a massive overhaul but should be a in a good position to take a step forward. Thoughts?
