Hello! I did a full drain and fill at 1,202 miles on my 2023 Mazda CX-5 2.5 Turbo and sent a sample off to Oil Analyzers. My concerns were confirmed: you should not wait 7,500 or even 5,000 miles for your first oil change. Here’s my oil analysis at only 1,202 miles.
From left to right: old oil sample, new oil, new filter, factory filter
Iron: 15
Aluminum: 4
Copper: 43
Silicon: 58
Fuel Dilution: 4%
Viscosity @ 100°C: 8.5 cSt
Base No: 5.19
This supports the notion that you want to get initial wear metals and assembly silicon out of your engine early to reduce unnecessary wear. The fuel dilution isn’t great, either. I expect these results to sharply improve in the next two oil changes as parts wear-in and the piston rings achieve a better seal to reduce fuel contamination, which had already compromised my 5W-30 oil and reduced its viscosity closer to that of a 0W-20. Of course it could have started out on the thinner side for fuel economy as well.
I also took the opportunity to install a Fumoto valve to make this process much easier going forward. Questions and comments welcome.
