I think KP actually has one of the, if not the best chance in the NBA at shutting down Wemby this season when they face each other.

When you think about it , he’s only 1 in shorter. Yes his wingspan is 6 inches shorter but KP jump really high, he has a max touch of over 12 foot. I don’t think Wemby release point is that much higher than 12 foot.

Also KP is barely slower and less agile than Wemby. I don’t think Wemby has enough good handles to beat him off the dribble. He’s also way stronger than Wemby so he can’t back him in the post.

I know KP’s injuries have hindered his athleticism but I don’t know if it’s that much. I still think he has the explosiveness and agility to guard him, I might be mistaken tho.

If not, do you think pre-injuries KP would have been his defensive nightmare?

no Wemby is going to be a 4. Spurs are going to park him at the perimeter in their set plays.

Aaron Gordon. Looney did a solid job on Wemby, he didn’t really do much in the halfcourt offensively at all. Strong, long guys who have mobility are gonna give Wemby issues in the halfcourt because as we saw in preseason he doesn’t yet outside of a lob have a truly reliable play to turn to in the halfcourt offensively.

Some of that to me being the continued growth of Sochan as a lead ballhandler and overall the Spurs finding their footing chemistry wise with Wemby.

I don’t think it’d be super sustainable to guard his release point. I feel like teams are instead gonna put wings who can swipe the ball while he’s handling it or bringing it up.

I think a solid wing in the 6’7-6’9 range with quick hands would give him fits. Nobody is blocking his shot so dw about that, he isnt a fantastic shooter so i would want a defender to just stay in his space and dig at the ball constantly. His handle is loose and he is so slight that as long as hes not catching deep in the paint you could hopefully stop him from getting where he wants. (Who is this mystery wing defender? Idk 🤷‍♀️)

Whichever players do best defending KD will do best defending Wemby. Being tall and lanky, his dribble will always be something to exploit. And physical pressure, which to be fair can work on anyone who doesn’t have that instant burst speed.
