It really comes down to the Lions window just now opening, while these teams windows are closing (for different reasons)
Philly has some really nice young pieces on offense at the skill positions and QB but 2 of their most valuable OL are in their mid 30s and could realistically retire any offseason. Kelce almost for sure is on his last year and lane is getting older. their defense on the other hand is aging gracefully but still aging, you got darius slay (32), james bradberry (30), fletcher cox (33), brandon graham (35) all 30+ and haason reddick (29) approaching 30 so there’s some urgency to get this done especially with the QBs mega deal finally kicking in
San Francisco on the other hand are operating on borrowed time due to the fact that Purdy is very very cheap right now ($889k cap hit in 2023) so they can afford to just load up with guys like javon hargrave, randy gregory, chase young etc rn while they have to pay their starting QB less than anyone else. They’re super cap tight even with that added benefit so whenever they gotta pay him or some QB again it’s going to be hard to fit all their pieces under
Detroit on the other hand already has a QB making decent bank ($30M a year for goff rn just about) so his new deal won’t dramatically change the makeup of the roster and the majority of the core are on their rookie deals or in their mid 20s, there really isn’t a foreseeable sudden drop because of age or losing guys to free agency or something like that, also they have a ton of future space to sign the guys they have rn
Seattle is in a similar spot because geno’s already been paid and their roster is very young, but they’ve got a coach who’s at the point where it wouldn’t be surprising for him to suddenly step away from the game, he’s 1 year away from tying the oldest HC of all-time record set by George Halas in 1967. So he wants to win right now
in 3 years time you’re looking at Penei becoming the highest paid tackle, goff extended for around $35M a year, st. brown around $20-25M, hutchinson $22-$30M, alim mcneill $10-15M, that’s alot of money
Laporta will get paid eventually, Decker needs a deal in 2 years, and Jonah Jackson is a FA
So why not Sweat, Young, or Williams?
Maybe if it was a position of need but it’s the opposite, hutchinson plays so many snaps and the lions prefer for their other edge player to be more of a 4-tech DE which neither of them are
Williams is a 3 tech DT, same as Alim Mcneil
The interesting question is, what if Hooker is good?
