I never realized the AI’s units don’t get kicked out of your cities when they declare war on you.

One of my first games on emperor difficulty, had a rude awakening when Willhelmina surrounded my city with a catapult and some cavalry, declared a surprise war and then took my capital immediately after. I expected the declaration, was building as many units as I could and had 2 turns left until my capitals walls would be done, so I thought I’d be fine.

In the long run I was, the city rebelled in 3 turns and rejoined me in 10 more, and my military is now 5x as strong as hers + I’m planning a counterattack. But it was definitely a shock going from never being attacked on king to that, and I temporarily went into panic mode and thought maybe I’m not good enough for emperor yet. Anyone have similar experiences?
