TLDR: Lamar is still an elite passer because the way the nfl ranks passing offenses is terrible.
This ranking and qb stats in general piss me off to no end. These rankings use yards per game, pass attempts, and tds. Those stats depend heavily on your offensive system. If you’ve been a ravens for a while you know that we’ve always had a “run the ball and play defense” philosophy so of course we won’t rank high in those stats.
The stats that you should be looking at is passing yards per attempt and completed air yards per attempt (fyi: this stats shows how far a qb throws the ball past the line of scrimmage before it’s caught). When it comes to those stats, the ravens are 5th in the league in yards per attempt and Lamar, on average, throws the football farther than burrow, mahomes, Allen, t-law, and herbert. 5 qbs who people swear are better passers than Lamar.
If you’re interested in the completed air yards stat it’s on the next gen stats website. Passing yards per attempt is on the nfl website.
I feel like I’ve been promoting these guys ballot lately but seriously I recommend a PFF subscription my friend. They look at this stuff and also grade throws based on difficulty similar to how teams do it internally.
You’re right Lamar will likely never top QB charts based on traditional metrics. He’s just a different kind of player.
