I went to look at a 2012 E70 X5 35i (N55) with around 130K km on it, and was surprised to find out there isn’t a repair history. Current owner bought it at 25K km from a dealership and has put on mostly highway miles since, with synthetic oil changes every 8K km. They just replaced the brake pads, but apart from that and regular oil/filter changes, it hasn’t required any work.

Ran it through my code reader and there were very few codes. The only one that concerned me was 2E10 (valvetronic system disabled, warning threshold value, control deviations exceeded too often), but that only occurred once and there are no issues with rough idle, power loss, or anything like that now, so it’s possible it was just an isolated sensor issue. Sounds good, drives well (solid, no odd sounds or feelings).

There is some preventative maintenance that will need to be done in the near future: transmission fluid/pan/filter, water pump/thermostat, oil filter housing gasket and drive belt/tensioner. I should be able to handle at least some of that myself.

Based on my past experience with my 2003 M3 and 2009 Mercedes ML320, it’s almost incomprehensible to me that a 10-year old car with 130K km hasn’t had at least a few serious issues. Assuming that all the info I have is correct, would your take be that this is a gem that I should try to get (not a Friday afternoon production date), or is the fact that nothing has come up yet mean that a bunch of stuff that is typically problematic by this point is probably about to go?
