Hurts running the ball should be NOT be part the fundmental game plan. His running the ball should not be essential to setting up the offense. The team should be able to line-up and create lanes for running backs. Hurts should only scramble for yardage and designed runs should be so infrequent that they are surprise plays.
As long as the downvotes are rolling…I don’t like RPOs. They had their time. Too many negatives. Just hand the ball off and let the O-line get in rhythm and blow them off the line.
It’s funny that fans still don’t realize that designed runs aren’t a huge part of his game. Hurts has 5500 yards from the pocket since the start of last season which is #1, and also has the most TDs and highest passer rating from the pocket. He is not a running QB, he’s a pocket passer who can run when he needs to and his coach sprinkles in a few designed runs a game to keep the defense honest. He’s not running the ball a ton at all, his attempts are inflated by the QB sneaks which is one of the safest plays in NFL history in terms of injury rate… He generally only runs when needed and is a very safe runner, he avoids contact at all costs now
Hurts is the least of my concerns when it comes to the run game.
So the Eagles have 3 of top 5 O lineman in ALL of the NFL and we can’t consistently run the ball w/o Jalen?
Yeah, we’ve pretty much gone away from them. Which is why the Eagles run game has also become pretty much useless.
The effectiveness of our run game is as much about Jalen Hurts as it is about our offensive line
Yeah kind of what /u/cjweisman said.
It’s certainly possible to design a run game that doesn’t lean on the threat of Hurts running. The thing is, this entire offense has been set up (and drilled, and taught) to run through zone read. It’s not something that you can just change mid-season and expect to be impactful. Besides, if you go away from the zone read, you’re essentially self-nerfing one of the key abilities that makes Hurts stand out compared to other teams and makes us difficult to defend.
Why are so many comments against the idea that the team SHOULD be able run ball with running backs, and not the quarterback?
So our O line is not good enough?
Remember the ole run the ball, control the clock? Let’s get some better tackles, control the ball and the clock. The secondary can’t be exposed if the other team does not have the ball.
For all the downvoters on this thread…
At this point the Eagles are mostly ineffective at running the ball, this despite the “great” O-line. We can’t control the ball nor clock late in games.
