Context: I drive a speed6 and I had the suspicion that my therm was stuck open. Haven’t noticed it during the summer because of the hotter weather, now with cooler ambient temps I’m realizing that I think it was definitely stuck open.
I had a code pop up for low operational temp and that’s what finally got me going. Swapped thermostats today and from what I can tell it was 100% getting stuck and binding. I have also noticed a small loss of coolant over the last few months but it was never more than a few ounces. But after pulling the old thermostat and seeing the condition of the housing I am pretty sure that is where my leak was.
It looks like a part change has happened from (what I’m assuming was the stock thermostat) and the revised part. Housing hose connection nipple is shorter and the thermostat itself a a completely different unit. Looks smaller (maybe due to this being a problem back then).
So before swap my normal driving temp was like 175 - 180 f.
With the new thermostat (and distilled water) my driving temp is 198-201 f
That seems more appropriate and on par with majority of the cars, trucks and boats I’ve worked on.
Anyway just looking to compare temps with any speeds out there
