Rewatched some of the game and I’ll focus on the offense here.
Our receivers are struggling to get open against man coverage. Dorsey needs to find better plays to get our guys open. Rub routes, hitches, anything. Our receivers are all running 15 yards downfield, then breaking at the same time. That doesn’t help Josh at all. There needs to be a progression with his reads. If the D lines up in man, we need more designed plays to get Allen on the move. Zone is the only time we’re getting a rhythm on offense. That said, Josh needs to make better pre-snap decisions when the D lines up in zone. Too many times he’s looking at the wrong receiver and it leads to incompletions. Our first drive was full of quick throws against the zone and it led to chunks of YAC. Then we inexplicably stopped throwing those.
We can’t give up on the run that quickly. Even when we were down 2 scores, we still had a half of football left to score points. We’ve seen this offense go down and score a touchdown in 4 plays; there’s no reason to panic and go shotgun every play when there’s 5 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. With Knox out, Dorsey needs to get creative or else we become completely one-dimensional. I’d love to see option plays that roll Josh outside making him a threat to pass/run or pitch to Shakir/Cook.
And FWIW, Josh’s passer rating when under center is 130.7 and his rating is 93.8 from shotgun. 127.3 with play-action and 93.3 w/o PA.
13 percent play action is absolutely unacceptable for this team, needs to be closer to 30.
