I am seriously considering an N55 535i BMW for my first car as it is relatively affordable and I love how they sound, look and how easy it is to modify them to make power. I have done hours of research around common failure points of an N55 and how to fix them and am comfortable working on cars.
The main reason I am asking is because I’m scared of reliability, although the n55 is significantly more reliable than a n54 it still worries me and makes me not want to even consider buying a BMW.
What’s your budget?
Good first car?
Not at all.

Your insurance will be high until you turn 25. Under 25 + sporty car = very high risk driver in their eyes

I’m assuming you’re a teenage male. You’re very likely to do things with this car you’ll regret once you’re older. Like throw on Live to Offend ™-style mods, drive very recklessly and pose a danger to yourself and other drivers. There’s a very high chance you’ll wrap it around a telephone pole.

Even if you can do all of the work yourself, the parts and mods for an N55 will be expensive. You’ll be stuck eating cups of ramen while buying parts and mods for this car. Trust me, there’s much better food out there than cups of ramen
No I would not mind getting a honda or toyota at all, I love those things and they are absolute tanks, but have always had a love for euro cars especially Mercdes and BMW and I just wanted to see if this is a car that I could get as a first car as basically like the only reason I made this reddit post is to see other owners of BMWs and especially the 535i would recommend this due to the reliability issues that come with it. I have watched an unhealthy amount of hours about owners reviews of this car and most people haven’t had any major issues at all but that thought of somthing really going wrong and totaling the whole motor because of a crappy thing like a oil filter housing leak or something like that scares me to not eant to buy a car like this or a modern BMW at all.
I’ve heard a ton of great things about this car and the n55 and quite a bit of bad, I don’t wanna sound like I’m that guy but I can control my self not to show off in a 300+hp rear wheel drive car, and I have been driving a decent amount now, it’s not the power that worries me and again I’m not trying to sound like that guy that can easily handle a powerful car but I think I have a good amount of self control and restraint to not mash the gas all the time.
But to be honest I think you’re right a car like this is probably too nice for a young teenager to own, also don’t worry man you didn’t sound like a party proper you gave great advice. :)
