Morning all. This is probably going to be asked more than enough times, but I figure members of this community are much better placed to answer than any Googling I can do.

Been interested in a Steam Deck for quite a while, couldn’t quite scrape together the funds required and/or was hoping and waiting for a sale of some kind. My plan was to buy a 64gb in some form of Black Friday sale, upgrade the SSD and go along my merry way.

Obviously the OLED announcement has thrown up a lot more questions regarding which model, the differences etc. I’ve not used an OLED device before and I like good graphics as much as the next person - but I didn’t see the point in buying an OLED Switch when I already had an LCD Switch, for example.

I have a PS5 which I use for the bigger games, i.e. CoD, Hogwarts Legacy etc. My use case for the deck is really emulation (PS2, PS3, GameCube, NDS etc.) (I have an Anbernic RG353m for the retro systems) and then some PC games (Football Manager, Spider-Man, Steam games etc.).

From people who have a Deck, your advice on the following would be appreciated! :)

  1. Is an OLED screen really that much better? As in, worth an extra £100 or so?
  2. Will it be worth the £100 extra if I’m spending 99% of my time not playing AAA games?
  3. Has the 64gb model now got a different SSD? It’s now listed as NVME which I’m sure it wasn’t before, hence my thinking of upgrading initially?
  4. I’d go for the 512gb OLED model if I was to buy the OLED as I wouldn’t need 1tb, particularly with expandable SD storage. If I was to get an LCD model, is 256gb sufficient with a similar sized SD card or 512gb for what is now £40 more?
  5. Is there likely to be any further price reductions / will the current pricing go up at any point?

TIA!

The difference from normal to OLED Switch was bigger because of the jump from 6.2 to 7 inches. Far more noticeable and a big thing if you prefer handheld mode. Steam Deck has “just” a jump from 7 to 7.4 inches (good enough for me).

Yes the OLED screen is better and there are minor upgrades overall, but the LCD modell is still good an if you dont care you can now get a used LCD Deck very cheap because everyone is selling theirs now. I just saw 1tb Decks for around 350-400€ and thats criminal cheap compared to the 569€ and 679€ that valve is asking for the OLED models.

Just keep in mind the Power of the OLED models is basically the same.
