I’ve recently installed a Dream Machine Pro SE at my home and am now considering extending internet access to my backyard office, which is located on the opposite side of my home from the DMP SE. My knowledge of networking is quite basic, and I’m looking for some guidance on the best approach and equipment to use for this project.
My current plan involves taking advantage of some construction work already happening. A contractor will be laying power cables to the office, running them around the house and then through a trench. I thought of asking the contractor to make the trench wide enough to include a conduit for an Ethernet cable.
This is where my limited networking knowledge comes into play. With the DMP SE already in place, would it be sufficient to just run a Cat 5 cable to the office and then connect it to a switch there? From this switch, could I directly connect my PC and possibly add a Wi-Fi access point (AP), or both?
If this plan sounds feasible, that’s great. If not, I would appreciate guidance on the correct approach. Also, I’m wondering whether Cat 5 is the best choice for this scenario or if there’s a better option. In the office, I plan to connect two computers via hard wire, an access point, a security camera, and possibly one or two other devices.
The cable length will be < 150’.
Internet speed is 1gb up and 1gb down.
