Kind of a popular opinion in this sub, but I think it’s time that we hold another circle jerk.

    Like most of the rules in the NFL rule book, this one has a lot of nuance. Unfortunately. Rule 12, section 1 where blocking and use of hands and arms is defined is three or four pages long. No shit.

    Offensive holding has 9 exceptions. No shit.

    So rule 12, section 1, article 3©, in the extra subsection marked Blocking notes states quite clearly: "When a defensive player is held by an offensive player during the following situations, Offensive Holding will not be called: . . .

    (i) if, during a defensive charge, a defensive player uses a “rip” technique that puts an offensive player in a position that would normally be holding.

    And Hutch got hisself a nasty rip move. So whenever he uses it to beat a defender, they’re allowed to hold him. Sucks, but it is that way for every DE in the game.
