There were only four games when any other Sixer has scored 40 or more in a game since 2015. Those games are Tyrese Maxey’s 44 point game vs the Raptors last season, Ben Simmons’s 42 point game against the Jazz in 2021, and James Harden’s 45 and 42 point games in games 1 and 5 versus the Celtics this May. Of those four games, Joel Embiid only played in the fourth one. Maxey’s development as a scorer is a huge step in the right direction for the franchise since Embiid was the clear primary scorer for the team since 2017-2018. Even though James Harden was the closest we got to an elite scorer before now, it was clear that his roles were as a playmaker and a secondary scorer to Embiid. Maxey’s new role under Nick Nurse can open up all sorts of possibilities on the offense. Not only that, it also reduces the scoring load on Embiid, which allows him to be more aggressive on defense. For years, this team needed a young player that can consistently carry the scoring load alongside Embiid and it looks like we finally found him.
